What is a Title Tag?

The Title Tag is an HTML code that shows the words that appear in the Title bar at the top of your web browser.

Usually, the Title Tag is the first element in the <Head> area of your site, followed by the Meta Description and the Meta Keywords Tags. 

Why is the title tag imporatant?

The title of your website is the headline of your page and needs to comunicate the theme of your web page. This headline needs to appeal to visitors so that they want to take a look at your site. The title also needs to appeal to search engines so that they will index your site and rank you well.

Nearly all search engines use the title tag to gather information about your website and from this the search engines will determine the relevance of your web page and rank your site accordingly.

The title tag is also used for the title of your listing in the search results and therefore potential visitors may make their mind up about your site from this and decide whether to take a look at your website or your competitor's website.

How can I improve my title tag?

Keywords are crucial in your title tag as search engines use the content of the title tag to analyze the relevance of the web page and this will have a direct effect on the ranking of your website.

A crisply worded title tag that includes your most relevant keyword phrases while also announcing the summary of your web page content will have a positive effect on your website's ranking with the search engines.

It is important that the same keywords from your title tag are also used in your page content and the meta description of your web page, as this will add weight to these keywords are therefore help with the ranking of your website.

 

Title Tag - Points to  Remember.

  • The title tag should announce the summary of your web page content.
  • A crisply worded sales pitch is more likely to entice users to click on your site
  • Consider using singular and plural forms of important keywords, although do not overdo it.
  • Title tag length - 50 - 80 characters (including spaces)  is considered the right length. 
  • Don't repeat your keywords in the title tag as the density of keywords here is not considered important by search engines.
  • The sequence of your keywords is important, so try natural phrases that will read better and therefore be keyword phrases.
  • Use different title tags throughout your site and keep them very focused to your web page's topic.
  • Most search engines are not case sensitive, so keep your title tag visually appealing.
  • Ensure your title tag is not just a collection of keywords, but a description of your web page that makes sense grammatically.
  • You can add the product or service that you are offering in the title tag instead of the company name unless it is a well known company that is likely to be searched for. Of course it is possible to add both, but add you company name after your service.

A crisply worded title tag that includes the most relevant researched keyword phrases and also gives a good summary of the web page’s content is far more likely to rank well with the search engines, as Google and other search engines use the content of the title tag during the ranking process to analyze the relevance of the web page.
