Submit to Search Engines

NB Make sure you optimize all pages of site before submitting manually to the major search engines and directories.

If you use the Internet to run or promote a business, nothing is more important to your success than being listed with search engines - they are your customer's tool of choice for locating products and services on the Internet - outranking banner advertising and all other forms of media.

Just think: the customers who visit your web site as a result of a search engine query are usually already interested in the products or services you provide. They are ‘hot’ prospects.

One of the main factors search engines use when determining the relevance of an individual web page are the 'keywords' and 'keyword phrases' that appear within it's content.

Most wanted

There are no more than 12 search engines or directories that really count in terms of web traffic - between them they generate more than 90% of all web searches, either directly or by supplying their results to other web search tools.

Search engines use automated tools such as 'crawlers' or 'spiders' to scan the web and index every website that they find, but you can proactively submit your site details - search engines will visit the site and index the text and HTML tags.

In contrast to directories, that are compiled manually by humans, the search engines are automated so tend to have a much greater coverage of the web and therefore provide better opportunities for a site to achieve a ranking across more search terms - although optimizing a website for each search engine is crucial in order to get these results.

Get Direct

Directories submit your site with all applicable directories and listings are often free, but sometimes require a link back to them. This will give your site more links, which is advantageous in gaining a higher listing in search engines.

NB When directories that you have subscribed to are used to search for your terms then they will direct to your site, but before you ever submit to a directory, make sure you know exactly what you want your description to be, and the exact category where you would like to be placed as changes at a later date may be impossible.

The big names

All these big names operate differently and will use a variety of 'algorithms' to retrieve websites once a search has been made on them. However, please remember that these algorithms change regularly and therefore optimizing your site should be an ongoing process.

Top tip: Submit your site to the main search engines and resubmit your site any time you make significant changes.

Search engines should revisit on a regular schedule. However, some have grown smart enough to realize that some sites only change content once or twice a year, so they may visit less often.

Resubmitting after major changes will help ensure that your site's content is kept current. However submitting your site too often is not a good idea, especially if no significant changes have been made, as search engines do not look favourably on this.

Verify and maintain your listing - check on your pages and ensure they get listed. Once your pages are listed in a search engine, monitor your listing every week or two as strange things can happen: pages can disappear, links can go haywire – look out for trouble, and resubmit if you spot any problems.
