Focusing your content

Content is still king

Content is still all-important.

Top tip: Not only does a well written, easy-to-navigate site engage and satisfy visitors, it also satisfies the needs of search engines.

Take a good hard look at your site(s) and ask yourself these questions for every page. This process will improve your site for visitors and search engines alike:

  • Is there a clear focal point for this page?
  • Are there multiple focal points on this page? If so, what are they?
  • Do the product descriptions give visitors enough information to place an order?
  • If they don’t, what information do people need to see?
  • What looks clickable on this page? Why does it look clickable?
  • Does this page offer too many, too little, or the right amount of choices?

Adding fresh content

You do need to keep changing the content and making the site focused and relevant as this again not only engages visitors, it also helps with search engine ranking.

If your content is changed regularly, visitors will return - as will search engine spiders that may even automatically re-spider the site on a monthly basis and award a greater relevancy rating to the site. This, in turn, will have a positive effect on your ranking within search engines.

Remember: For a page to rank well in the search engines, it must be focused and have a number of specific keyword phrases

Headings

It is essential to use keyword phrases in your headings, as search engines place relevance on headings.

Body Copy

Ensure your content is informative and focused to the the page title including keyword phrases. This is essential for search engines and visitors.

Subheadings

Use subheadings to divide different subjects related to the same topic. Keywords are neccesary here too.

Bulleted Lists

Bulleted lists are ideal to relay information in an easy to read format that will appeal to visitors but are also good for search engines.

Paragraphs

Google appears to prefer pages to contain short paragraphs

Lists

Use bullet and numbered lists to relay information as these rank better.

Sentences

keep the length of sentences mostly brief - 10 words and fewer. Longer sentences should be sprinkled throughout the text rather than clumped together.
